Debugging Google syncing

On the Sync with Other Calendars > Google Calendar page, you can set up a sync between Acuity scheduling and Google calendar.  You have the option to 1-way sync (add Acuity appointments into Google) or 2-way sync (add Acuity appointments into Google and add Google events into Acuity to block off your scheduling calendar).  If you've set up a sync and you're not seeing events and appointments syncing as they should be, here are some common debug cases:

Events from Google not showing in Acuity

  • First, check to be sure that you've set up a 2-way sync with Google to add Google events into Acuity, rather than just a 1-way sync.  Head over to the Sync with Other Calendars > Google Calendar page, and make sure that the box for "Enable blocking off times in Acuity from" is checked, as that would ensure that events from Google are added into Acuity.  After that box is checked, events from Google can take up to 20 minutes to sync into Acuity, but after the initial sync occurs then events will sync between programs immediately.

  • If a 2-way has been set up, check that the event is marked as "Busy" in Google rather than "Available".  Only events marked as "Busy" will sync over into Acuity.  To find out if an event is marked as "Busy" click on the event on your Google calendar, then scroll down to the "Show me as" area of the event details.

  • If you're looking at your Google calendar on a calendar app, head over to https://calendar.google.com/ and check to see that your Google events are showing on Google's calendar, as the issue could be that Google isn't syncing properly to Google's calendar app.

Events from Acuity not showing in Google

  • The initial Google sync can take up to 20 minutes for appointments to sync between programs, so if you've just set up the sync wait 20 minutes, as appointments could be in the process of syncing.
  • Check that you're viewing the correct calendar in Google.  It's an easy step to overlook, but in Google make sure you're viewing the correct Google calendars by expanding the "My Calendars" drop-down in the left hand calendars column.
  • If you're looking at your Google calendar on a calendar app, head over to https://calendar.google.com/ and check to see that your Google events are showing on Google's calendar, as the issue could be that Google isn't syncing properly to Google's calendar app.

Debugging syncing with multiple Google calendars

  • Are you syncing multiple calendars to multiple calendars inside of Google?  If so, calendars need to be shared in Google with access to "Make changes to events".  This needs to be done in order for events to successfully sync between programs.  Appointments from Acuity couldn't be added into a "Read only" calendar, and "Free/Busy" calendars couldn't add events into Acuity at all.  So sharing calendars with access to "Make changes to events" allows events to sync between programs.  For help sharing calendars in Google, check out Google's  help article on that.

Still not working?

If you've tried all of the above, and are still not seeing events syncing properly between Google and Acuity, please contact us, letting us know:

  • A specific event name, date, and time, that isn't syncing over into Acuity Scheduling from Google, or which appointment from Acuity isn't going to Google
  • Is it showing on the Google Calendar website or an app? If you're using an app to view your calendar, what is the name of it?

With those details we'll be able to start looking into it even more!
